MANILA / PHILIPPINES — President Duterte skipped the annual Philippine Independence Day rites at Rizal Park in Manila Monday morning.
Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella announced to the members of the media that Duterte will not be able to attend the rites around 7:50 a.m.
Abella did not provide additional details on Duterte’s absence.
Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea was also clueless about the reason why Duterte decided to not show up at the said event.
Hence, Vice President Leni Robredo led the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony together with Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, who represented Duterte.
According to Cayetano, Duterte was not feeling well and that he needed to rest as the President was only able to get three hours of sleep after monitoring the developments in Marawi City.
“The President has been working 24/7, meeting the troops, meeting the commanders, and then late last night, visiting the wounded and mga namatay (the fallen),” Cayetano explained
“That’s why this morning, he didn’t feel that well. Nothing to worry about but it’s better for him to rest because as you know the target was to liberate Marawi today, June 12,” he said.
